Umbrella Yoga Partnered with the Richmond Fellowship to deliver sessions at The Media Centre

We have been delighted to work with the Richmond Fellowship to provide a set of accessible yoga sessions at the Media Centre, in Huddersfield. This project has been part of our Community Plus funded programme to provide “Open to All” yoga sessions across Kirklees,

The Media Centre has proved to be a comfortable, accessible and central location for people from diverse backgrounds and abilities, to join together to benefit from the practice of yoga. Through the coordination and facilitation of the Richmond Fellowship, many participants enjoyed yoga for the first time, or the first time in a long time.

These classes demonstrated that yoga can be accessible to anyone, with gentle movement and simple breath practices, and yet the effectiveness is profound.

During these classes, while everyone was encouraged to adapt and change the movement to suit their own physical abilities and limitations, carefully crafted movements helped everyone to ease aches and pains, build strength and resilience, and even offered an appropriate challenge. Staying strong and mobile improves quality of life as well as building confidence and improving mental wellbeing.

Every class included some form of breath awareness, which was accessible to everyone and especially affective for calming the nervous system and relaxing the mind. Movements were done mindfully and with attention. Attention to detail and moving slowly not only gives an opportunity for a busy mind to slow down, but it can help general concentration and memory too.

Not taking ourselves too seriously, the classes were joyful and fun, even during the challenges of standing on one leg.

Sometimes we found our limitations, and sometimes we surprised ourselves at what was possible, but there was plenty of laughter through it all.

Yoga can help foster a sense of autonomy of our own bodies and develop a sense knowing ourselves better. Through these weeks of practice, students not only got to know themselves better, but also each other. As students enjoyed these practices together week upon week, there was a real feeling coherence and belonging.

Everyone seemed to leave the classes feeling both uplifted and relaxed and with a smile on their face.

It has been a real pleasure to work with Karl and Ziona from the Richmond Fellowship. They have been wonderfully welcoming and ensured that every week has run smoothly. We hope to be able to work together again in the future.
