But feeling it and proving it are two different things, which is exactly why we ran a 12-week service evaluation with 60 participants at Umbrella Yoga.
The results confirm something many of us have long suspected: yoga genuinely changes how the body and nervous system respond, even when the changes aren’t always the ones you’d expect.

What We Set Out to Measure
Our evaluation, led by Dr Ellie Firth, tracked physical and physiological markers across a 12-week programme of weekly yoga sessions. We measured:
- Hand grip strength, using a dynamometer
- Fine motor control, using the 9-hole peg test (time to place and remove 9 pegs)
- Shoulder mobility, using the Apley Scratch Test
- Gait and mobility, using a 5-metre walk test (time and step count)
- Heart rate and blood oxygen saturation, using a pulse oximeter, before and after the first and last sessions
The aim wasn’t just to see whether yoga “worked.” It was to understand which specific dimensions of wellbeing it supports, using measures that don’t rely on participants being able to describe their own experience in detail.
What the Data Actually Showed
Physical measures (small improvements, not statistically significant):

In plain terms: yoga measurably calmed people down and helped their bodies use oxygen more efficiently. That’s not a small thing. Better oxygen saturation has knock-on benefits for alertness, energy, mood, and immune function, and a genuinely lower heart rate after a session is about as clear a sign of relaxation as you can get from a piece of equipment.
The qualitative feedback backed this up in participants’ own words:
- “Yoga makes me feel good. I want to do yoga again next week.”
- “I like all the different poses, it’s relaxing and peaceful.”
- “I feel more better and feel proud and happy. I feel it’s good for me.”
